14-16 Megapixel Digital Cameras
14 and 16 megapixel sensors have, in 2012, become the standard for most compact cameras. Noise handling has actually come along quite nicely among the new CMOS sensors, but beware some of the older 14 and 16 megapixel CCD sensors that are included in the cheaper cameras. These models aren't necessarily able to take advantage of all that resolution, and oftentimes blur away both noise and fine detail with overzealous noise reduction software. There are even higher resolution sensors out there now (up to 18 megapixels!) but trust us, 16 is more than enough.
Some of the best APS-C sized sensors ever produced are Sony's 16 megapixel CMOS sensors used in a variety of 2011 models. Variations of this sensor have been used in Nikon's D5100 and D7000, Sony's A55 and NEX-5, and the Pentax k-5, our enthusiast camera of 2011. Newer, higher megapixel models have since been announced by Sony, but all these are still great choices that perform very well when the lighting gets low.
